What is WBENC?

Founded in 1997, the Women’s Business Enterprise National Council (WBENC) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit. WBENC partners with 14 Regional Partner Organizations (RPOs) to provide its world-class standard of certification to women-owned businesses throughout the country and offers programming and resources to help women-owned businesses thrive. WBENC is the leading advocate for women-owned businesses in corporate and government supply chains. WBEC Metro NY is a WBENC RPO.

What is WBENC Certification?

WBENC Certification is the most widely recognized and respected national certification for women-owned businesses in the U.S. It validates that a business is at least 51 percent owned, controlled, operated, and managed by a woman or women. WBENC Certification is the most widely recognized and respected national certification for women-owned businesses in the U.S.

Through certification, women-owned businesses gain access to a vast network of support, including targeted business opportunities for certified women-owned firms, increased visibility in corporate and government supply chains, education, and development programs to spur growth and increase capacity, networking, and mentorship opportunities with thousands of women entrepreneurs and those who support them.

WBENC is also an approved third-party certifier for the SBA’s Women-Owned Small Business (WOSB) Federal Contracting Program.

 

Certification Criteria:
  1. At least fifty-one percent ownership by a woman or women
  2. Proof of effective management and control of the business
  3. Documented evidence of contribution of capital and/or expertise
  4. U.S. Citizenship or Legal Resident Alien status

WBEC Metro NY is a regional affiliate of the Women’s Business Enterprise National Council (WBENC), the nation’s leading advocate of women-owned businesses and third-party certification organization.

  • WBENC is a coalition of corporations, regionally focused women’s business organizations and certified women business owners.
  • WBEC Metro NY issues the nationally recognized certification to qualifying women-owned businesses in New York, Northern New Jersey, and Southern Connecticut.
  • WBENC guidelines are the most widely recognized and respected third-party certification. WBENC certification is based on a review of WBENC standards and site visit by a committee comprised of trained, committed, and confidential volunteers.
  • Nearly all the Fortune 1000 Corporations require that a woman-owned business be WBENC certified before providing access to their supplier diversity programs.
